Postal dept revenue up in Pune region, highest growth in India The Department of Posts (DoP), Pune region, has recorded a revenue growth of 20 per cent in the financial year 2011-12 over the last financial year. The figure much higher than the state and national figures. While the national revenue growth for the DoP was 10 per cent in 2011-12, for Maharashtra circle, it was just eight per cent. Interestingly, this year, the revenue earned through Savings Bank Operations (SBOs) is higher than that from postal operations (POs). In 2010-2011, the revenue earned by POs and Savings Bank Cash Certificates (SBCCs) was Rs 78.49 crore and Rs 69.53 crore respectively. In 2011-12, the revenue from SBCCs was Rs 99.79 crore, while for POs, it was Rs 78.34 crore. Among the five regions in Maharashta — Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Goa and Aurangabad — Pune recorded the highest number (15.16 lakh) of new savings bank accounts in 2011-12. In other big regions like Mumbai and Goa, the figure was 1.38 lakh and 4.18 lakh respectively. Postmaster general (Pune region) Col K C Mishra attributes the growth to factors like new projects, focus on soft skills and new technology. One of the initiatives that contributed to the growth was Mail Network Optimisation Project (MNOP), which was launched in November 2010. “It focusses on 10 key performance indices. The fortnightly progress in each of the 88 hubs is reviewed during a video conference with the secretary, DoP,” says Mishra. Due to MNOP, the transit time of Speed Post has come down by around a day-and-a-half, he said. Also, there has been substantial volume growth in the number of speed post articles across the country. The Pune hub, with a 2.5-fold growth in the number of Speed Post articles between February 2011 and February 2012, is second only to Noida. Major post offices across the country are being monitored on Data Extraction Tool (DET) for core operations and are covered under Look & Feel of Project Arrow. Departmental post offices up to level ‘C’ were computerised across the country recently. Mishra said in the insurance sector, Pune region has contributed about a third of the total policies procured in Maharashtra circle. The total premium from postal life insurance and rural postal life insurance was Rs 64.53 crore in the financial year 2010-11. It grew by 10.2 per cent to Rs 71.11 crore in 2011-2012. “To extend our coverage, we increased the number of direct agents and the ceiling of sum assured under postal life insurance from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh,” said Mishra. Pune region’s second Post Office on Wheels was launched on Wednesday. The flag-off ceremony was held at the Office of Postmaster General.
